Twenty-nine Persons Killed While Mining
Eleven of the 29 persons killed in the mines of West Virginia during August met their death in McDowell County, according to the monthly report of R. M. Lumble, chief of the state department of mines.
This was due largely due to the fact that mines in most districts were not running, because of the strike or for other reasons….
Names of Men Killed
McDowell – Wrex Harvell, assistant mine foreman, was injured by being caught between car and rib at No. 3 mine, Central Pocahontas Coal Company and died August 7th.
Monongalia – George McKinney, motorman, was killed by being caught between motor and timber at Rock Forge No. 1 Mine, Connellsville Basin Coke Company.
McDowell – Ernest Rector, miner, was killed by fall of slate at No. 8 mine, Premier Pocahontas Collieries Company.
Fayette – Eddie Cashion, miner, outside, was electrocuted at Ansted mine. The Gauley Mountain Coal Company.
Wyoming – Walter Halsey, brakeman, outside, was killed by being run over by car at Sabine mine, Sabine Collieries Company.
Barbour – John Hotsenpiller, motorman, was electrocuted at Empire Mine, Salkeld Coal Company.
Logan – Calvin Samson, brakeman, was killed by being run over by motor at Amherst No. 2 mine, Amherst Coal Company.
McDowell – C. W. Lawson was killed by powder exploding while making up shots to be fired at working places, No. 241 mine, The Consolidation Coal Company.
Barbour – Charles Dawson, trackman, was killed by fall of slate at No. 8 mine, Willuquison Coal Company. McDowell – Henry Clark, brakeman & motorman, killed by being run over by motor at No. 254 mine, The Consolidated Coal Company.
McDowell – Henry Thompson, miner, was killed by fall of slate at Christian Mine, Christian Coal Company.
McDowell – Romey Martin, Negro, miner, was killed by fall of slate at Shawnee mine, Pulaski Iron Company.
McDowell – Cliff Poindexter, motorman, outside, was electrocuted at Bottom Creek mine, Bottom Creek Coal Company.
Wayne – Floyd Brewer, driver, was killed by being run over by car at Warfield mine, Warfield Mining Company.
Mingo – James Berry, Negro, miner & brakeman, was killed by being caught between car and rib at Puritan mine, Puritan Coal Corporation. McDowell – Alex Szabo, Hungarian, miner, was injured by being burned about the face and body by gas, which was ignited while setting timber and taking down slate at Yukon No. 1 mine, Yukon Pocahontas Coal Company, and died August 19th.
Kanawha - Frank Hannaker, laborer, outside, was killed when rope broke on incline, Lewiston mine, H. M. J. Coal Company.
Fayette – Daniel Hydon, miner, was killed by fall of slate at Kingston No. 5 mine, Solvay Collieries Company.
Ohio – Joe Thomas, Polish, miner, was killed by fall of slate at Richland mine, Richland Coal Company.
McDowell – J. M. Day, locomotive fireman, outside, was killed by being caught between engine cab and timber at Vera No. 1 mine, Vera Pocahontas Coal Company.
Kanawha – Charles Beirne, miner, was killed by fall of slate at Barren Creek mine, Barren Creek Colliery Company.
Mingo – S. R. Hale, machine helper, was killed by fall of slate at Cinderella mine, Sycamore Coal Company.
`Mercer – Robert Tester, tipple greaser, was injured by being caught in cogwheels of tipple conveyor, Arista No. 1 and 2 mines, The S. J. Patterson Pocahontas Company and died August 22nd.
Fayette – Ira Stowart, a brakeman, was killed by fall of slate at Oakwood mine, White Oak Coal Company. Upshur – C. M. Greathouse, slateman, was killed by fall of slate at Red Rock mine, Peerless Coal Mining Company.
McDowell – Adah Block, Polish, mining machine helper, was injured by fall of slate at No. 3 mine, Central Pocahontas Coal Company and died August 29th.
Raleigh – Armstead Hill, Negro, miner, was killed by being caught between car and rib at Beckley mine, Beckley Coal and Coke Company. Logan – M. G. Hunter, Englishman, mine superintendent, was killed by fall of slate at Rossmore mine, Logan Mining Company.
McDowell – John B. Fletcher, miner, was killed by fall of slate at Newhall No. 7 mine, New River and Pocahontas Consolidate Coal Company.
